About 95 soldiers from the Iowa Army National Guard's Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 109th Medical Battalion, will deploy to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt as part of the Multinational Force Observer mission, officials announced Jan. 10.
The soldiers, based in Iowa City, will deploy in February. They will provide command and control to three companies that provide logistical, medical, aviation and explosive ordnance removal support to all 11 MFO contingents.
The soldiers will serve one year on active duty. Officials expect to have a send-off for the soldiers in early February, before they leave for training at Fort Lewis, Wash.
The unit was last mobilized in 2003, when it provided medical support and care throughout Iraq. The battalion returned from that deployment in April 2004.
