A much-anticipated Army Competitive Category promotion selection list will be released Tuesday, putting nearly 2,000 basic-branch captains on the fast track to major.
The list, with separate sections for officers of the Maneuver, Fires and Effects; Operational Support; and Force Sustainment categories, was compiled by a board that met in January.
Promotions off the new list cannot begin until the nominations are confirmed by the Senate.
Given the Army's chronic shortage of majors, personnel officials expect advancements off the list will begin immediately after Senate approval.
Release of the list comes as the Army is accelerating promotions to major by about six months, from an average pin-on point of 9.5 years to nine years.
To support the new pin-on point, the Army will conduct the fiscal 2010 and 2011 Army Competitive Category O-4 boards in October 2009 and 2010, several months earlier than the traditional timing for major boards.
The speedier promotions, along with an average primary zone select rate of more than 90 percent, are designed to partially offset a shortage of some 3,000 majors in all branches and corps.
