PITMAN, N.J. — Family members say they've been notified that a U.S. Army Ranger from southern New Jersey has been killed in action in Afghanistan.
Dianne Hammond, the mother of 28-year-old Sgt. Alessandro Plutino of Pitman told the Gloucester County Times that she was notified that her son was killed Monday by enemy gunfire. Hammond said the family last talked to their son when he called to reassure them he hadn't been involved in the helicopter crash that killed 30 U.S. troops on Saturday.
Plutino was a rifle team leader in B Company, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was on his third tour in Afghanistan.
Plutino was a 2001 graduate of Pitman High School, where he played football and wrestled.
He joined the Army after graduation from Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
