Guard announces newest top enlisted soldier

Command Sgt. Maj. Brunk W. Conley is the new senior enlisted soldier for the Army National Guard.

Conley became the 10th command sergeant major of the Army Guard during a ceremony Sept. 26 at the Army National Guard Readiness Center in Arlington,Va.

He succeeds Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Burch, who is returning to duty with the Nebraska Army National Guard. Previously, Conley served as the command sergeant major of the Oregon National Guard.

An infantryman, Conley enlisted in 1981. He served with 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment before transitioning to the Oregon Guard. He has deployed twice with the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, first to Iraq in October 2003 and then Afghanistan in 2006. Conley also served in New Orleans in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina.

In his new position, Conley represents and advises the director of the Army Guard on matters pertaining to the Guard's enlisted soldiers and coordinates with the Sergeant Major of the Army and other senior enlisted leaders.
