Nominations open today, Oct. 3, for Operation Homefront's 2013 Military Child of the Year awards, which recognize military children who have shown resilience and strength of character and who thrive in the face of the challenges of military life.

Winners from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy will each receive $5,000 and a laptop, and will be flown with a parent or guardian to Washington, D.C., for a recognition ceremony on April 11.

Nominations will be accepted">online through Dec. 15. Children from ages 8 to 18 are eligible.

The 2012 winners, including the 9-year-old son of a sailor, were all good students who not only stepped in to help their own military families, but were heavily involved in helping other military families in their communities.

"It's not just the military members who serve, but their families serve as well," said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of Operation Homefront, in a statement announcing the opening of nominations. "We think these young patriots deserve to be honored for their sacrifice and their leadership."

Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial and other assistance to families of service members and wounded warriors.
