A selection board that met in August has recommended 150 members of the Individual Ready Reserve and the Drilling Individual Mobilization Augmentee program for promotion to the ranks of staff sergeant through sergeant major.

Select rates for the annual Army Reserve board were 33 percent for sergeant major (150 considered, five selected); 19.7 percent for master sergeant (132 considered, 26 selected); 80.2 percent for sergeant first class (81 considered, 65 selected); and 74.7 percent for staff sergeant (83 considered, 62 selected).

In its after-action report to the Office of the G1 (Human Resources), the selection board noted that only 30 percent of the promotion candidates had an official photo in their board file.

The board members also said 30 percent of the photos it reviewed displayed improper awards and decorations, outdated rank insignia and the improper wear of the uniform, to include hair length, nail length or color and untrimmed mustaches.

Members also said many of the promotion candidates did not use the online My Board File application to review and update the documents in their official file.

Only 22 percent of the staff sergeant candidates, 49 percent of the SFC candidates, 62 percent of the master sergeant candidates and 56 percent of the sergeant major candidates used My Board file.

"The lack of My Board File review was evident throughout the board process," the members reported. "The board was required to make an assessment of [a noncommissioned officer's] potential for promotion with outdated files."
