Three soldiers who died after being attacked with an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan have been identified.
The Defense Department said Monday that Staff Sgt. Dain T. Venne, 29, of Port Henry, N.Y.; Spc. Ryan P. Jayne, 22, of Campbell, N.Y.; and Spc. Brett E. Gornewicz, 27, of Alden, N.Y., died of wounds suffered Friday in Paktia province, Afghanistan.
They were assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command, Oswego, N.Y.
The deaths of Venne and Jayne were reported earlier by The Evening Tribune of Hornell, N.Y., and The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh, N.Y.
The Evening Tribune reported that Jayne was home on leave visiting relatives in Canisteo in Steuben County and left to return to Afghanistan last Monday.
