Sergeants major courses set for August start

Class 64 of the resident Sergeants Major Course at Fort Bliss, Texas, has been scheduled for Aug. 13, 2013, to June 20, 2014, under guidance issued by the Army in late November. Class 40 of the nonresident SMC is scheduled from Aug. 12, 2013 to July 13, 2015.

Registration and attendance policies apply to both Regular Army and Army Reserve soldiers.

Graduates of the 10-month resident course incur a two-year service obligation, while those who complete the two-year nonresident course incur a six-month obligation.

Under an Army directive issued earlier this year, all noncommissioned officers scheduled for enrollment in Class 64 or Class 40 must complete Structured Self-Development 4 before attending the Sergeants Major Course.

Most soldiers who attend the 10-month course were selected for schooling by the fiscal 2012 sergeant major board that met in June.

Master sergeants who successfully complete the course will be frocked to sergeant major and assigned an E-9 promotion sequence number.

Attendance at the upcoming course will require a permanent change-of-station move for students. NCOs who decline attendance must retire or separate.

Master sergeants who are stationed overseas — and who have a rotation date before June 1 — must voluntarily extend their tours to June 1 or later to meet the Class 64 report date of Aug. 6.

Overseas soldiers who require curtailment of their rotation date will be given credit for completion of a normal overseas tour.

Administrative functions for enrollment in Class 40 of the nonresident course will begin Aug. 5.

At that time, the course will be activated so soldiers can register and log in.

"Soldiers who fail to register or make contact with the Sergeants Major Academy by the 45th day will be reported as no-shows," according to guidance issued Nov. 16 by Human Resources Command.
