HONOLULU — Soldiers from Oahu's Fort Shafter out for some exercise ended up rescuing a threatened green sea turtle.
A Fort Shafter spokesman says the soldiers were kayaking Monday on Oahu's North Shore from Haleiwa along Anahula River when they noticed something unusual.
Spc. Henry Caldera says the soldiers saw one of the buoys on a crab trap bobbing aggressively. When they paddled closer they could see that a young sea turtle was tangled underwater in the net.
When Caldera and outdoor recreation instructor Sharon Nakai lifted the approximately 35-pound turtle into the kayak, they could see it was being strangled by the net. Caldera says they freed the turtle and it gasped for air.
NOAA's sea turtle stranding hotline was called and the turtle, alive and recovering, was quickly handed over.
