Lewis-McChord soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Thursday.

Sgt. David J. Chambers, 25, of Hampton, Va., died Jan. 16 in Panjwai District, Kandahar Province, after he encountered an enemy IED while on dismounted patrol, the department said in a news release.

Chambers was assigned to 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, under control of the 7th Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., the release said.
