FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The elderly mother of an Indiana-born soldier killed during the Vietnam War has received a posthumous Purple Heart honoring her son more than 43 years after his death.

The Journal Gazette reports that Capt. Herbert Crosby’s 94-year-old mother received the medal Friday during a ceremony at the Florida nursing home where she lives.

That ceremony marked the end of a long campaign by the Fort Wayne native’s sister to get the honor she strongly believed he deserved.

Crosby was 22 when his helicopter went down in Vietnam in January 1970. His father died in 1991, never knowing exactly what happened to his son or his body.

Crosby’s remains were finally identified in 2006. The following year, he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
