PADUCAH, Ky. — The remains of a soldier who disappeared during World War II are being sent home.

The Paducah Sun reported that the remains of William T. Carneal were discovered in Saipan, along with dog tags, a high school ring and American coins.

Sandy Hart of the Kentucky Veteran and Patriot Museum in Wickliffe said Carneal enlisted in October 1941. He was reported missing in action in 1944 and declared dead a year later.

Carneal has no immediate family left, but his niece, Mary Carneal Christian of Paducah, said her family was overwhelmed to hear his remains had been discovered.

Despite the evidence found with the remains, the military has not officially declared them to be Carneal’s. Christian plans to submit one of the letters her uncle sealed for DNA testing.
