FORT KNOX, Ky. — A new logo for Fort Knox is starting to appear around the Army post in central Kentucky.

The logo prominently features a silhouette of a soldier on one knee holding a weapon with a yellow outline of the state behind him and the Fort Knox slogan, “Strength starts here.” It also includes five descriptions that reflect the history and current purpose of the post: human capital, training, leadership, effects and heritage.

Garrison commander Col. Bruce Jenkins told The News-Enterprise that the logo is on the Fort Knox website, the exterior of the welcome center and signs around the post.

He said the logo will be rolled out further, including signs in surrounding communities.

Jenkins said officials wanted the design to prominently feature the soldier.

“Soldiers are not in the Army,” he said. “Soldiers are the Army.”

Jenkins said the idea for a logo really took off when Maj. Gen. Mark McDonald was post commander. He said post officials tried sketching different logo designs and even held a contest, but nothing contained all the right elements.

That’s when Fort Knox media relations officer Kyle Hodges decided to try his hand at developing a logo. Perhaps due to his intimate knowledge of the post and its missions, officials liked his design. Although it was tweaked — he originally submitted a silhouette of a soldier saluting — Fort Knox opted to go with Hodges’ submission.

Hodges said it was fun to use his hobby in visual design to help in his profession.

“It’s something I’ve always enjoyed,” he said. “It’s something I looked at doing as a career in college.”

Jenkins called Hodges the “brain” behind the logo design, which he said will help outsiders to define Fort Knox’s identity.

Hodges concurred.

“It represents Fort Knox well,” he said.
