Relatives of slain soldier speak out after killing

PHENIX CITY, ALA. — A woman charged in the slaying of her soldier husband sought a divorce and moved a boyfriend into her home after her husband deployed for service, relatives of the dead man said.

Relatives of Sgt. First Class Donald Lashon Wilson, speaking in interviews with WTVM-TV, said they suspected something was wrong between Wilson and wife Gloria Wilson.

Wilson, 34, and a man described as her boyfriend, 27-year-old Travis Leonard, are charged in the shooting of the Fort Benning soldier.

Wilson was found shot multiple times early Monday in Fort Mitchell, and his wife was arrested early Tuesday. Leonard was arrested Thursday, and bond for him and Wilson was set at $500,000 each.

Records don't show whether either Wilson or Leonard has hired a lawyer.

The Wilsons began dating in 2007 and married on June 6, 2011.

One of the victim's sisters, Kendra Wilson-Hudson, said she talked with him the day before his death, and he mentioned the possibility of the marriage breaking up.

"I tried to give him encouragement about his marriage. He told me (Gloria) asked for a divorce. He loved his wife. He devoted all his time to her and tried to make everything better," Wilson-Hudson said.

The Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus reported previously that Gloria Wilson was having an affair with Leonard while Donald Wilson was reassigned to Hawaii. Wilson told her he wanted a divorce, and authorities said she and Taylor plotted to kill him for about $450,000 in benefit money.

The sister said Leonard had moved into the Wilson home after the soldier deployed for duty.

"She played this off as if (Leonard) was her God brother," she said. "My brother would've never stood for anything like that."

The victim's mother, Betty Wilson, said she knew something was wrong.

"I've always known. From the first day I met her, I got bad vibes from her," Betty Wilson said.

Wilson was found in a ditch in Seale Monday morning and Phenix City police found his car on fire in a parking lot.

Wilson will be buried in his hometown of Sylacauga. He had two children.
