Fourth soldier killed in IED blast identified

ELK RIDGE, UTAH — A soldier from Utah has been killed in an explosion in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Cody Towse, 21, was among four soldiers killed when an improvised explosive device detonated Tuesday in Sanjaray, Afghanistan.

The Army had reported him missing in action earlier in the week and visited the soldier’s family home in Elk Ridge on Saturday night to confirm the death.

Family spokesman Todd Phillips said the medic’s family was told that Towse was treating an injured soldier when he was killed in a second explosion.

“He died giving aide to another,” Phillips told The Salt Lake Tribune.

A 2010 graduate of Salem Hills High School, Towse chose the Army in 2011 over serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Jim Towse said his son wanted to serve in the military because he believed he could use his skills as a certified EMT and volunteer firefighter to save lives. He earned a combat medic ribbon last month for saving another soldier’s life.

“Cody was a hero’s hero,” his father told Provo’s Daily Herald. “He was no coward. He knew his duty and did it.”

His son never worried about being in Afghanistan, believing the worst for U.S. troops was over, Jim Towse said.

“He thought things were winding down, definitely. He wasn’t scared,” the father told the Deseret News, adding his son also thought the terrorists were “too chicken to come out and fight.”

Towse was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division from El Paso, Texas-based Fort Bliss.

Other survivors include his mother, Jamie, and three siblings.

Funeral arrangements were pending.
