ANCHORAGE, ALASKA — An Alaska-based paratrooper is conscious and alert after a parachute malfunctioned during a training exercise.

U.S. Army spokesman John Pennell says the soldier was taken to a hospital on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson after Tuesday’s training exercise at the base’s Malamute drop zone.

He says the parachute’s canopy didn’t fully deploy. It wasn’t immediately known how far the paratrooper fell, but Pennell says they normally jump from about 1,500 feet.

Pennell says the unidentified soldier’s injuries are not considered life-threatening but he is undergoing a full body scan.

KTUU reports the training operation is a mass tactical airborne training exercise. About 530 paratroopers were scheduled to land Tuesday from five aircraft after two 105-mm howitzers and an 81-mm mortar had been dropped on the Malamute drop zone.
