HONOLULU — Two “Go for Broke” veterans in their 90s are being belatedly recognized for their service in World War II.

Ninety-one-year-old Seichi Sakaida and 92-year-old Clarence Tamayori both served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated unit of mostly Japanese-Americans.

KHON reports Hawaii Army National Guard Col. Roberts Lesher formally presented the men with Bronze Star medals Wednesday.

Tamayori said he enlisted because he felt it was his duty at the time. He said he was fighting for his country, the state of Hawaii and his family name.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is the most highly decorated military unit in U.S. history for its size and length of service.
