The U.S. military is investigating the death of a Marine lance corporal who was deployed with the aircraft carrier Nimitz, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

Lance Cpl. Benjamin Tuttle, 19, died Sunday at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany following a medical evacuation from the Nimitz. The incident occurred after a port visit in the 5th Fleet area of operations, according to a Pentagon news release. He was with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323, an F/A-18 Hornet squadron out of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif.

Marine officials at Miramar did not immediately have more information available. The Nimitz arrived July 5 in port in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to its Facebook page. It was back underway in the Gulf of Oman as of Sunday, according to photos released by the Navy.

Staff writer Sam Fellman contributed to this report.
