The president has nominated Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Thomas D. Waldhauser to become director for operations plans and joint force development, J-7, with the Joint Staff. The announcement was made today by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

Waldhauser, who is now the senior military assistant to the secretary of defense, has also been nominated for appointment to the same rank.

His removal as the consolidated disposition authority for prosecuting the Marines involved in urinating on dead Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan is central to the DoD inspector general’s investigation into Gen. Jim Amos, commandant of the Marine Corps.

If confirmed by the Senate, Waldhauser would assist the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by enhancing joint force development through war plans, doctrine, education, joint training and exercises, lessons learned and operational analysis.

Waldhauser was promoted to his current rank in 2009 and served as deputy commandant for plans, polices and operations until 2010. He left that assignment to serve as commanding general of I Marine Expeditionary Force and commanding general of Marine Corps Forces Central Command. He was appointed to serve as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in March 2012, and continued in that capacity under Hagel.

He has also served as commanding general for the service’s warfighting laboratory and as deputy commander of Marine Corps Combat Development Command.

The Army’s top general at Fort Stewart has been nominated to succeed Waldhauser as the senior military assistant to Hagel.

Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams would rise to the rank of lieutenant general and add a third star to his uniform.
