RADFORD, VA. — A former Marine who punched another man in August 2011 has been sentenced to one year and six months in prison for his role in that man’s death.
Erik Czajkowski was sentenced Thursday in relation to the death of 39-year-old Michael Allen Duncan.
The 26-year-old former Radford University student was originally scheduled to have a two-day jury trial for second-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding charges.
Instead, The Roanoke Times reports that Czajkowski pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and unlawful wounding.
Prosecutors say he punched Duncan in the face outside a Radford restaurant, causing Duncan to fall back onto the sidewalk and suffer severe head trauma. He died days later.
Before being sentenced, Czajkowski told Duncan’s family and friends that he was “so deeply sorry.”
