FORT WAINWRIGHT, ALASKA — Army Alaska officials have identified the soldier who drowned Sunday in a lake near Fairbanks.

Fort Wainwright authorities said in a release that 32-year-old Sgt. Anton Epshteyn of Valley Village, Calif., drowned at Chena Lakes Recreation Area.

Officials said he called for help and then disappeared under the water. Other swimmers heard the call but couldn’t find him in the murky water.

The body was recovered Monday after a two-day search.

Epshteyn was a construction engineer assigned to an engineering company attached to U.S. Army Alaska’s 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

He joined the Army in 2003, and he had been stationed at Fort Wainwright since 2008. He served three combat tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The latter was a one-year mission that ended in April 2012.
