AVONDALE, LA. — Huntington Ingalls Industries says the amphibious transport dock Somerset is back from three days of successful sea trials in the Gulf of Mexico.

Itís one of three such ships named for 9/11 attack sites. Itís named for the Pennsylvania county where a hijacked airliner crashed after passengers stormed the cockpit.

Ingalls program director Mike Duthu said in a news release Monday that more than 200 tests included checks of propulsion, steering, navigation, communications, weapons, anchor handling and flight operations.

The Somerset will undergo the same tests for the Navy.

LPDs are 684-foot-long, 105-foot-wide ships used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by a variety of boats and aircraft.

The Somerset is the last ship to be made at Avondale.
