FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A police officer who shot and killed a Fort Bragg soldier last year has been cleared of wrongdoing, although the soldier’s family is not convinced by the investigation.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West reviewed a State Bureau of Investigation report and found no criminal conduct.
Staff Sgt. Mark Salazar was shot in his driveway on May 5, 2012, and died a week later.
Three officers responded to a call saying Salazar was in his front yard firing a gun. Authorities said one officer shot Salazar when he raised the gun in their direction.
Danielle Richardson, the mother of the soldier’s 5-year-old son, said none of the reports said Salazar aimed at the officer who fired.
