Bliss soldier dies after being wounded in Afghanistan

The Defense Department on Saturday identified a Fort Bliss soldier who died of wounds he received during a noncombat-related incident in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Robert E. Thomas Jr., 24, of Fontana, Calif., died Friday at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, according to a news release. He died of wounds suffered during an incident April 21 in Maiwand, Afghanistan, the release said.

Further details about his injuries were not released.

Thomas was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, Fort Bliss, Texas, the release said.
