INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana National Guard officials say a sergeant from Indianapolis serving in Afghanistan has died from a non-combat related illness.
Indiana National Guard Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, announced in a news release Sunday that 43-year-old Staff Sgt. Randall R. Lane died Friday at Camp Phoenix in Kabul, Afghanistan. The type of illness was not disclosed.
Lane deployed in January 2013 as a member of 1438th Transportation Company, stationed in Franklin, and had served as a motor transport operator providing security for convoy operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Gov. Mike Pence said he and his wife were praying for Lane and his wife and family, saying he is grateful for the sacrifices of people like Lane.
Funeral details are pending.
