NEWPORT, R.I. — A police officer at Naval Station Newport has died after being struck on the base by a government truck driven by another Navy employee.
A base spokeswoman said Friday that Frank J. Lema, Sr., a detective who had worked 21 years in the base's security office, was hit around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. He was taken to Newport Hospital, then Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, where he died at 10:15 p.m.
Spokeswoman Lisa Rama did not identify the driver and did not give details of what happened. She said the accident is being investigated jointly by the Navy Criminal Investigative Service and the Rhode Island State Police.
State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell said his agency was assisting with forensics and accident reconstruction.
Rama said NCIS is involved because Lema worked for base security.
