Navy expects bonus, travel and separation payouts to resume this week

Thousands of sailors whose special pays went missing last week have a new reason for cheer, despite all the shutdown gloom: Officials say their bonus money will arrive by week’s end.

“Bonuses, separation, travel and many other types [of] payments (including those missed over the last week) will soon begin flowing,” the chief of naval personnel said in an updated post on the Navy’s official blog Tuesday afternoon.

CNP says it now has the authority to disperse all allowances and pays, including special pays like the anniversary payments for re-enlistment bonuses that went unpaid last week. Officials had been unable to say when those payments, typically ranging into the thousands of dollars, would be made because of the federal shutdown.

Personnel officials said they’re able to reimburse those who traveled on fiscal year 2013 orders as soon as this week. Payments for those on FY14 orders are still being worked out but will be paid.

Sailors should monitor their bank accounts for direct deposits “over the next few days” and alert their command or personnel support detachment early next week if they haven’t been paid, CNP said.

Morgan Simmons is the wife of a second class petty officer who hasn’t received his $3,800 re-up bonus.

“We depend on this every year for our four kids’ Christmas presents and their winter clothes,” Simmons told Navy Times in an electronic message. “We’re not sure what we’re going to be able to do.”

However, not all the money is forthcoming. CNP warned that Reserve sailors won’t receive pay for inactive duty training.
