The cruiser Princeton’s extended deployment will end Tuesday with the ship’s expected arrival in San Diego, Pacific Fleet announced in a Monday afternoon news release.

The ship left San Diego on April 3 for what was set to be a six-month deployment as part of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group. A potential U.S. strike on Syria changed that; the CSG’s deployment was extended as the Navy built up assets in the region.

As the chance of a strike faded, some ships headed home. The Nimitz itself, now escorted by the cruiser San Jacinto and destroyer Mason, will be back by Christmas, the Navy said last week.

“Throughout this extended deployment, Princeton’s crew has performed superbly, maintaining an incredible work ethic, total commitment to our mission and pride in our ship.” the cruiser’s commanding officer, Capt. Charles Good, said in the Pacific Fleet release.

In addition to escort duties, the Princeton’s 325-sailor crew engaged in multinational training exercises and even saved five Yemeni fisherman stranded at sea last month.
