NEWPORT, R.I. — Nearly 70 years after he was shot out of the sky, parachuted behind enemy lines and was a POW in Bulgaria, a World War II vet is about to receive the Purple Heart.
The Newport Daily News reports that George Chaplin, listed as missing in action over Romania in 1944, was asked to pose for a photo with his Purple Heart at a military reunion several years ago.
When he said he never received one, he was told he should have. Two years ago, the retired Episcopal minister, now 90, approached Sen. Jack Reed’s office.
Chaplin arrived in Europe as part of the Air Force’s 485th bomber group in May 1944. A month later, his B-24 was headed to bomb a fuel depot in Romania when it was hit by anti-aircraft fire.
