The commander of Camp Atterbury, Ind., will pin on his first star and serve as the joint director of personnel for the National Guard Bureau, officials announced Nov. 26.

Col. Ivan Denton will begin his new assignment in Washington, D.C., Jan. 1. He will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general in December.

In his role as the national-level personnel director for both the Army and Air National Guard, Denton will be responsible for plans, programs and policies associated with individual and unit readiness for more than 460,000 Guard troops serving in 3,600 communities across the country and three territories.

Denton, a career infantry soldier with combat experience in Panama and Iraq, enlisted in the Indiana National guard in 1982 and received his commission in 1986 after graduating from Indiana University, according to information from the Indiana Guard.

He served on active duty for four years, with assignments in Korea and with the 75th Ranger Regiment during Operation Just Cause in 1990. He returned to the Indiana Guard in 1990.

Before his two-year tenure as commander of Camp Atterbury, Denton commanded the 219th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade and deployed to Iraq. He also commanded one of the first five National Guard infantry battalions mobilized in 2002 to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.
