A U.S. sailor was arrested in September for allegedly raping an Australian civilian woman, a Navy official confirmed Tuesday.

The sailor, a seaman assigned to the amphibious transport dock Denver, was arrested in Darwin on Sept. 11 on suspicion of aggravated sexual assault, 7th Fleet spokesman Lt. David Levy told Navy Times.

The U.S. Privacy Act doesn’t allow for names to be released until formal charges are filed, Levy said.

The seaman was released into Navy custody Sept. 13 and allowed to rejoin his unit in Sasebo, Japan, until a scheduled Jan. 8 court hearing in Australia.

“The sailor will return to Australia when requested,” Levy said.

The seaman was arrested during a two-day port call, to pick up the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and their equipment following an exercise in the Bradshaw Field Training Area.

The ship and the embarked MEU left Darwin on Sept. 12.
