Air Force Times has obtained the list of 23 career fields that some airmen will still be able to retrain into this year.

Combat control, operations intelligence, geospatial intelligence, pararescue, special operations weather, and aircraft fuel systems are among the jobs that airmen can retrain into in fiscal 2014.

The Air Force announced Nov. 26 that it is dropping at least 35 career fields from the list of jobs that airmen can retrain into this year, due to the sequester. The Air Force previously intended to allow airmen in overmanned specialties the opportunity to retrain into undermanned fields, based on tentative projections. However, the Air Force’s latest projections show that at least 35 Air Force specialty codes that were believed to be undermanned are actually overmanned, and allowing airmen to retrain into them would exacerbate overmanning.

After repeated requests for the list of career fields that are being dropped from the retraining list, the Air Force said it would not be available until at least Dec. 2. The Air Force would not confirm the accuracy of the list, which Air Force Times obtained from a reader.

However, by comparing the list of career fields that are still listed as being open to retraining to the Air Force’s previous list of undermanned career fields that were open to retraining, Air Force Times identified 37 fields that are no longer on the list. Those fields include flight engineers, contracting, logistics plans, and cyber systems operations.
