Navy shoppers at about 50 exchanges fleetwide have a new way to save money — free Wi-Fi.

The move is designed to help customers compare prices and find product information, or even just save time by checking emails while in line or in the aisles, Navy Exchange Service Command officials said in a Dec. 6 news release announcing the move.

Some exchanges already had limited Wi-Fi connectivity; the Navy spent about $269,000 to expand coverage in those stores and add it to the stores without coverage, said Kristine Sturkie, a public affairs specialist at NEXCOM. The service will cost $400,000 annually, she said.

Other exchanges could go wireless “based on requests from our stores and customer need,” Sturkie said in an email. Smaller locations, where customers have fewer choices and spend less time shopping, may not be good candidates for Wi-Fi services.

“The landscape of retail is changing, and more customers are using their smartphones to shop, find product information and even product reviews,” Richard Dow, NEXCOM senior vice president for store operations, said in the release. “Offering free Wi-Fi is another customer service we provide as part of the NEX shopping experience.”
