Out of professional football for the entire regular season, a former Naval Academy star has caught on with his third NFL team as the playoffs approach.

Reserve Lt. Eric Kettani, a fullback who was cut from the Washington Redskins’ practice squad in late August, joined the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad on Tuesday, according to a report on the team’s official website.

The Chiefs wrap up their season on Sunday at San Diego against the Chargers and have clinched a spot in the playoffs. Practice-squad members aren’t eligible to play in games, but work out with the club throughout the week.

Kettani was signed by the New England Patriots in 2009, shortly after graduating, then left the team to continue his active-duty service commitment. He was released from that commitment in 2012 and caught on with the Redskins later that year.

As a running back in Annapolis, Kettani averaged 5.3 yards per carry on the way to 2,091 career rushing yards.

He tweeted a photo of his new uniform on Tuesday with a simple message: “The dream continues!”
