Compensation commission in San Antonio next week

Military troops, families and retirees in the San Antonio area will have an opportunity to offer feedback next week about potential changes to the military pay and benefits system.

The Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission will hold public hearings and a town hall meeting at Fort Sam Houston and a local veterans hospital on January 6 and 7.

The commission that was created by Congress last year ďwill hear testimony from witnesses on matters surrounding the programs that compensate the members of our uniformed services and that therefore support the long-term health of the All-Volunteer Force,Ē according to the commissionís statement.

The commission is tasked with a big-picture review of military pay and benefits and ultimately providing formal recommendations to Congress on how to overhaul the current compensation system.

With personnel costs coming under growing pressure amid declining defense budgets, the commissionís work could lead to major changes to the way the all-volunteer force is paid.

The commissionís events in San Antonio include:

■ Monday, January 6: Public hearings from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston Army Community Service Center

■ Monday January 6: Town Hall meeting from 7-9 p.m. at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio

■ Tuesday, Jan. 7: Public hearings from 8:30 am to 12 p.m. at the Warrior and Family Support Center, Building at Fort Sam Houston

Further details are on the commissionís website.
