VAN LEAR, KY. — A 21-year-old soldier from eastern Kentucky who died in Afghanistan is being remembered by his former educators as bright and giving.

The Defense Department said Pfc. Joshua A. Gray of Van Lear died Monday at Bagram Airfield from a noncombat incident. His death is under investigation.

Gray was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y. Fort Drum said Gray was a satellite communications system operator maintainer.

Educators at Johnson Central High School, where he graduated from in 2011, told The Independent that Gray was very intelligent and enjoyed helping others.

Teacher Amiee Cantrell-Webb says he was a brilliant, well-loved guy.
