RAEFORD, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after Fort Bragg soldiers found skeletal human remains while on a training exercise in Hoke County.

Soldiers and sheriff’s deputies were taking part in a joint training exercise late Tuesday when the remains were found in the southern part of the county northeast of Wagram. Sheriff Hubert Peterkin says the remains were found in a heavily wooded area with no roads.

Deputies searched the area Wednesday for evidence.

The remains were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Raleigh, where forensic teams will try to use dental records to identify the dead person.
