Making master chief gets a little tougher in latest cycle

An eligible senior chief’s shot at making master chief just got a harder for the first time in five years, according to new data released Tuesday.

The latest E-9 selection rate, 13.18 percent, is two percent lower after enjoying two years hovering around 15 percent. The last two years, the selection rates were 15.29 and 15.. That rate, however, is still above the 11.93 percent on the fiscal 2010 and 2011 boards.

Still, there’s good news: it’s the third best shot at moving up to the highest enlisted rank in the past decade.

The rates were released as the fiscal 2015 E-9 selection board began culling through the records of 3,004 senior chiefs, who are hoping to be among the 396 who’ll pick up a second star on their chief’s anchors in the coming year.

The actual quotas dropped by 87, down from last year’s 483, but the drop was offset by a decrease of 155 in the numbers of board eligible E-8’s competing.
