Maj. Gen. H.R. McMaster has made Time’s list of 100 most influential people in the world.

The commanding general of the Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Ga., is listed among pioneers on’s list, which was announced Thursday after an online poll.

Categories of the 100 most influential include titans, pioneers, artists, leaders and icons.

He is hailed as “the architect of the future U.S. Army” in the accompanying piece written by retired Lt. Gen. Dave Barno, who commanded U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2005.

“Major General Herbert Raymond McMaster might be the 21st century Army’s pre-eminent warrior-thinker,” Barno wrote. “Recently tapped for his third star, H.R. is also the rarest of soldiers — one who has repeatedly bucked the system and survived to join its senior ranks.”

Outspoken and twice passed over for his first star, McMaster is cited for his “impressive command and unconventional exploits in the second Iraq war,” Barno wrote.

McMaster was a cavalry commander in the Gulf War. He is the author of “Dereliction of Duty,” criticizing the military leadership during Vietnam. Before his current role, he was commander of the Combined Joint Inter-Agency Task Force Shafafiyat (Transparency) in Kabul, Afghanistan. He has also served as director of Concept Development and Learning at Army Training and Doctrine Command.

Contacted on Friday, the Maneuver Center public affairs office said the general was not immediately available for comment.

Others among the 100 most influential include Russia’s Vladimir Putin, President Obama, Hillary Clinton, documents leaker Edward Snowden, entertainer Beyonce — who is on the cover — and actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
