A warrant officer from Oceanside, California, assigned to a Fort Hood, Texas-based unit died in a non-combat incident in Afghanistan on Sunday, the Defense Department announced late Monday.

Chief Warrant Officer Deric M. Rasmussen, 33, with C Company, 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, died in Mazar-e-Sharif, according to the DoD news release.

Rasmussen joined C Company in January 2013, according to a Fort Hood news release issued Tuesday. He enlisted 10 years before that and made a previous war-zone deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007.

He deployed to Afghanistan in January.

His awards include two Joint Service Commendation Medals, a Navy Commendation Medal, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Army Achievement Medals, two Marine Corps Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal, campaign medals for Afghanistan and Iraq, and other decorations.

A Fort Hood spokesman said the incident that caused Rasmussen’s death was under investigation and could offer no further details.
