Active-duty sailors weren’t the only ones facing a more difficult path to make chief this year.
Eligible petty officers first class in the selected reserve had a 12.7 percent shot at moving up — 426 selected out of a 3,344-sailor pool. That’s down from 14.7 percent last year.
Full-time support sailors had a 14.7 percent shot this year, down from 18.4 percent last year. A little more than 1,000 FTS sailors were eligible for anchors this cycle, with 150 making the cut.
The Navy released the advancement list Friday after the selection board wrapped up in Millington, Tennessee. It convened May 19.
Vice Adm. Robin Braun, head of the Navy Reserve, offered the new chiefs her congratulations in a statement released by the Reserve.
“Every year, competition is extremely keen, and these new chief-selects have proven themselves through outstanding leadership, dedication, and superior performance,” Braun said. “We look forward to their continued growth and development during CPO 365 Phase II as they prepare to take on new leadership roles as Navy chief petty officers.”
Not all available quotas were filled: Officials often point out that selection boards for both active and Reserve sailors have the option to “give back” quotas if they don’t see enough fully qualified candidates. This year, 51 of the 477 selected reserve quotas were given back. In the FTS ranks, only one of the 151 available quotas was returned.?
