FAIRBANKS, ALASKA — An Alaska man accused of shooting fireworks and shining a spotlight at Army helicopters flying low over his house on night flights has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that Daniel Lee Slayden of North Pole entered his plea Friday in federal court in Fairbanks to one count of assaulting U.S. military personnel performing official duties.

Court papers say Slayden bought his home in March 2013 and grew irritated by helicopters from nearby Fort Wainwright flying about 1,000 feet above the ground.

According to a recorded conversation, Slayden complained to the public affairs office at Fort Wainwright, after which some helicopters appeared to shift south. Others still flew over his house.

Court documents say Slayden admitted that he began to shoot mortar-based fireworks near the helicopters and shine a spotlight at them.

The plea agreement calls for Slayden to be sentenced to three years' probation and fined $12,500. Sentencing is set for Oct. 2.
