MAYSVILLE, KY. — A bronze statue of Army Col. Charles Young will be in Mason County in September as part of a campaign to have him promoted posthumously to the rank of brigadier general.

The Ledger Independent reports the statue tour is part of a three-city tour in Kentucky, coordinated by the National Coalition of Black Veterans Organizations in conjunction with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Kentucky and Tennessee District.

Taft Thompson with Omega Phi is helping to coordinate a series of public events for the tour, which is scheduled for late September. Thompson said Mason County was selected as the first stop on the tour because of the restoration project currently taking place on the Young family log cabin in May’s Lick.

He said the tour is all geared toward “getting him (Young) to that star,” and raising him to the rank of brigadier general.

Young, who was a member of Omega Psi Phi, was the first African-American to achieve the rank of colonel, and the highest-ranking African-American officer in the United States Army until his death in 1922.

Young’s promotion must be approved by President Obama.
