President Obama has nominated Air Force Maj. Gen. Steven L. Kwast and Maj. Gen. Terrence J. O'Shaughnessy for appointment to lieutenant general and for new assignments, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced today.

Kwast, commander of the Curtis E. LeMay Center for Doctrine Development and Education and vice commander of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, has been nominated to move up to commander and president of Air University.

A 1986 Air Force Academy graduate, Kwast has led the Curtis E. LeMay Center since February. He moved there after a one-year assignment at the Pentagon leading the Air Force in the Quadrennial Defense Review. He is a command pilot with 3,300 flight hours in the F-15E, T-6, T-37 and T-38, including 650 combat hours. He was promoted to major general in May 2012.

O'Shaughnessy, who is director of operations at U.S. Pacific Command headquarters at Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, has been nominated for assignment as deputy commander of U.N. Command Korea; deputy commander of U.S. Forces Korea; commander of Air Component Command, Republic of Korea/U.S. Combined Forces Command; and commander of Seventh Air Force, Pacific Air Forces at Osan Air Base, Korea.

O'Shaughnessy also is a 1986 Air Force Academy graduate and command pilot with more than 3,000 flight hours in the F-16, AT/T-38 and T-37. He was promoted to major general in August 2013, when he assumed his current position at U.S. Pacific Command headquarters. Prior to that, he was deputy director for politico-military affairs for Asia at the Pentagon.

Both nominations must be confirmed by the Senate.
