Special Forces staff sgt. dies in Afghanistan

A soldier died on Sunday in Afghanistan due to a non-combat incident while on patrol, the Defense Department announced Monday.

Staff Sgt. Girard D. Gass Jr., assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died at Jalalabad Air Field Hospital in Afghanistan after the incident in Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, according to the DoD release.

Gass was from Lumber Bridge, North Carolina.

No further details about the incident or cause of death were included in the release.
