Intel officers offered retention bonuses

Certain captains and majors who are intelligence officers have until Sept. 22 to apply for a new critical skills retention bonus.

The Air Force Personnel Center said Aug. 7 that to be eligible, officers must be in the 14N intelligence Air Force specialty code and have graduated the 14N initial skills training course at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas. They could be eligible for bonuses of either $12,000, $20,000 or $30,00, depending on their grade, years of commissioned service and the bonus option they select. They will incur an active- duty service commitment of two to four years.

This bonus will help the Air Force hold on to airmen with critical skills, AFPC said.

“We simply can’t afford to lose the experience and skills of these intelligence officers who are critical to our national security,” Lt. Gen. Robert Otto, deputy chief of staff for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance said. “The incentives are targeted at retaining the incredible experience resident in these key year groups and is an integral part of the Air Force’s overarching effort to size, shape and stabilize the force.”

Captains also must be either in the 2004 year group and have a date of rank in 2008, in the 2005 year group and have a date of rank in 2009, in the 2006 year group and have a date of rank in 2010, or in the 2007 year group and have a date of rank in 2011.

Majors must be in the 2004 year group and have a date of rank in 2014.

Applicants must have finished their initial service obligation from when they were commissioned, and must have at least three years remaining on active duty by the time their bonus becomes effective. They won’t be eligible for the bonus if they are receiving any other retention bonuses, are awaiting involuntary separation or a court-martial action, or have had their security clearance permanently revoked.
