A 23-year-old specialist based at Fort Carson, Colorado, died early Saturday morning after being struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross an interstate highway on foot, police and base officials confirmed.

Spc. Timothy Brett Alexander arrived at the post in July 2013, about 2½ years after joining the Army, according to personnel records provided Tuesday by base officials after notification of Alexander’s next of kin.

Alexander served as a cavalry scout with 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, earned an Army Commendation Medal among other honors, and deployed to Afghanistan from April to November 2012, according to the records.

Colorado police told The (Colorado Springs) Gazette that the two cars were traveling northbound on Interstate 25 when they struck Alexander. No other injuries were reported.

Alexander, of Hinesville, Georgia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The Fort Carson community is deeply saddened by the death of Spc. Timothy Alexander, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and fellow Soldiers,” Fort Carson officials said in a statement.
