ATLANTA — A Coast Guard veteran and former U.S. Senator who represented Georgia will soon be recognized by the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Officials say Sam Nunn will be honored at the group’s Lone Sailor Awards Dinner Sept. 17 at the National Building Museum. The Lone Sailor award is given to veterans who have excelled in their civilian careers while serving as examples of the Navy’s core values of honor, courage and commitment.
Organizers of the event say Nunn attended Georgia Tech and Emory University, served in the U.S. Coast Guard and spent six years in the Coast Guard Reserve while practicing law and managing his family farm in Perry.
Nunn’s political career began in 1968, when he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives.
