Fisher House

The military and the nonprofit Fisher House Foundation provide some relief for active-duty and retiree families with a loved one who is seriously ill or critically injured, providing temporary lodging and support near military medical centers. These privately funded lodgings are known as Fisher Houses, after founders Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, a civilian couple who wanted to help service members.

The network of lodgings was established in 1990. Thirty-two Fisher Houses are located at VA medical centers and military installations in 14 states, the District of Columbia and Europe, serving more than 8,500 families per year. Three more Fisher Houses were in the works as of early 2007.

The cost and rules for staying at a Fisher House vary by installation and service. The average charge is less than $10 per night for a family, and some offer free rooms.

A doctor or social worker at a military hospital can issue referrals for admission to a Fisher House.
