If a certification program sounds too good to be true, then proceed with extra caution, said Richard Cotton, exercise physiologist and the national director of certification for the American College of Sports Medicine. Don’t just take an organization’s word for it: Make certain the National Commission for Certifying Agencies accredits your certification. There are currently only 10 different fitness organizations, such as ACSM and the American Council on Exercise, with NCCA-accredited certifications. A list of organizations and programs accredited to certify personal trainers is available online.
